Catt was in awe of Paul’s gift for connecting with people who suffered acute mental illness on their own terms, in a genuine way.

When Paul arrived he found Eloise huddled in back of the small storefront cave where she was living. The room was covered with artworks she’d recently made even though she no longer had a career. She was completely distraught but still, the idea of receiving a therapy house call struck her as funny. They sat in the kitchen together—the same spot where she’d tried to revive her dead boyfriend less than twenty-four hours before—smoking a joint and winding down to a point where she could even consider what happened. Her long hair was matted and her arms were scarred with infected bedbug bites. Paul wondered if Eloise expected him to make the first move, was that what was happening? Well okay, that’s better, Eloise sighed. But also maybe a pill? Within two weeks she’d be dead of an intentional overdose. She giggled and opened the bottle. You want one? The pill, a thirty-milligram oxy, was fantastic. Why had he been so cautious? The pill brought him back into the zone that he’d craved since that first sip of sake.
